The documents stored in the National Olympic Committee made it possible to reconstruct the chronology of the sport recognition of the National Federation.

The Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was adopted on 27th July 1990, it was given the status of constitutional law on 25 August 1991. On 19th September country acquired its current name – the Republic of Belarus.

On 22 March 1991, the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus was founded. That became a powerful impulse for the development of the entire sports movement in the country. On 3 July 1991, the newspaper "Fizkulturnik of Belarus" published Viktar Laugatch’s "We are Olympians in law!" which stated: "Yesterday the National Olympic Committee of Belarus was registered under the number 121 in the Ministry of Justice of the BSSR. Events in our country were like a tightly twisted spring. All of them, good and bad, big and small, have one essential detail. These events occur mostly, perhaps, due the most serious invisible yet tangible deficit of the past – a sense of freedom and independence. The springtime of the year of 1985, precisely turned the hands of the clock to the natural march of time, and us to our own self. In addition, a sense of nation began to be born, and we all discovered that even by the old Constitution our Republic is a state! We have become bolder in applying our own statehood attributes to the international standards after the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty. This also affected our sport. Byelorussia, whose achievements in the field of physical culture are generally recognized, declared its desire to participate more actively in the Olympic movement.

As a result, the National Olympic Committee was created in March 1991..."

It was during this period that independent sports associations began to form in Belarus under the support of the NOC (National Olympic Committee) and the Ministry of Sports, which during those years were headed by Uladzimir Ryzhenkov.

The Basketball Federation of the Republic of Belarus was registered within the Ministry of Justice on 29.01.1992 (registration certificate No. 230).

According to the letter dated 15.07.1992 and signed by Secretary General Borislav Stankovich the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) accepted the application for recognition on 10th July 1992: "We are happy to welcome you to our basketball family, which now includes 192 National Federations. We wish you success in basketball propaganda in your country."

In accordance with the Resolution of the Executive Committee of the NOC of Belarus dated 23 March 1993 (Protocol No. 5), a number of republican sport federations belonging to international sport federations were recognized by the IOC and were given the rights of collective members of the NOC, including the Basketball Federation of the Republic of Belarus.

In accordance with the NOC Charter, the decision was submitted for approval by the Olympic Assembly on 11th January 1994 and approved by the Resolution No. 2.

Later, in 1997, the name was changed to "Belarusian Basketball Federation" (the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, 04.03.1997, No. 0862).

The BBF regional offices were registered from 2001 to 2003.

The Presidents of the federation were:

1992-1998 – Bondar Aliaksander Ivanavich;

1998-2001 – Ananieu Mikalai Kanstantinavich;

2001-2008 – Pimenau Leu Vasilyevich;

2008- 2014 – Kamenkou Viktar Siarheevich;

from 2014 to the present days – Ryzhenkov Maksim Uladzimiravich.

According to the information presented in A. Bondar's book "The Chronicles of Belarusian Basketball", 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the development of basketball in our country. Now BBF is working on the reconstruction of the sport history on the territory of Belarus in the 1920s and 1930s.

Many interesting facts have already been collected thanks to the work of the archives staff, employees, and members of the BBF; and we will tell you them throughout 2021.
